Find the right bra to aid your recovery after a surgery

The period after your breast surgery is crucial for your recovery and well being. It can be a difficult time as we deal with swelling and pain, and our breasts take on a different shape or size to the one we’re used to.

Finding the right post surgery bras can help with comfort and wound care as you’re healing and gradually transition to a permanent option. When it comes to choosing a post surgical bra, your needs may vary depending on your surgery, so always follow the advice of your surgeon or nurse.

Do I need to wear a post surgery bra?

Whether you wear a post op bra will depend both on the advice of your doctor for your specific surgery, and your personal preference. Many women will find wearing a post-surgery bra to be more comfortable, but this isn’t always the case.

Immediately after surgery, it is possible you will be advised to wear a surgical bra. A surgical bra can help hold the wound dressing in place, protect your breast tissue, and in some cases help reduce swelling.

After a couple of weeks, you may transition from a surgical bra to a soft post-surgery bra option, such as a wirefree sports bra, as your breasts heal. Once your breasts have healed, you can slowly start to transition back to regular bras in your new size. This could take anywhere from six weeks to a year, so make sure to ask your surgeon or nurse.

What should I look for in a post surgery bra?

When recovering from surgery, you should make sure to choose a wirefree bra. Bras with underwires can not only be uncomfortable, but can also alter your breast shape or cause scarring.

Ideally, look for a bra that has:

  •       No underwire
  •       Soft seams
  •       A wide under band, with deep front and side panels
  •       Full cups
  •       Cup separation
  •       Adjustable straps
  •       Soft fabrics, without lace and detailing that may cause irritation
  •       High cotton content, which is gentler on the skin

Post surgery bra options

Triumph’s wirefree bra range has several options that could be comfortable post op bras, including our Body Make-up Soft Touch Wirefree Bra and our Everyday Soft Touch Wirefree Bra.  Many surgeons also recommend a wirefree sports bra, such as our Triaction Wellness Wirefree Bra.

Understanding bra size post-surgery

Your breast and chest shape are likely to change after surgery, and can continue to change for up to one year as they settle into their final size. During this time, we recommend you are fitted for your ideal bra size either in store or by online bra fit consultation each time you purchase bras.  Don’t fill your wardrobe with new bras all at once, as you may find your new size isn’t yet final.

Prioritizing comfort and fit can make the uncomfortable healing period a little easier.  If you’re finding it’s hard to put your bra on, or you’re required to limit your movement, you may find a front-fastening bra to be an easier option.

Post-surgery recovery tips

Rest and take it easy for the first two weeks

Your body needs time to heal, and you can help by getting plenty of rest and avoiding excessive or strenuous movement. If there’s ever a time to relax, it’s now. Make sure you assemble everything you need and keep it close by so you can stay comfortable without moving too much.

Actively care for your wounds

Depending on your surgery, your wounds may require different kinds of care. Make sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions closely to promote healing and avoid scarring.  If possible, ask a family member for help when changing your dressing so you can avoid difficult movements.

Gradually increase light movement and stretching

Once your surgeon gives you the ok, use simple movements and stretching to rebuild your strength. This could be as simple as walking around your house, or swinging your arms. If you find particular movements hurt or cause pain, stop and consult your surgeon.

Eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of fluid

A healthy, balanced diet and plenty of fluids will help your body take care of itself. You can stock your fridge and freezer with nutritious options before your surgery, or order from a meal delivery service to make things a little easier for yourself.

Caring for yourself and your breasts post surgery will help promote recovery and make this difficult time less unpleasant. Finding the right post surgery bras can keep you comfortable as your breasts recover. Your breasts may shift and change over the year ahead, so prepare for the journey and seek expert fitting advice.
