How Music Boosts Confidence: The Science Behind the Sound

Music can have a profound effect on our emotions, behaviours, and even our sense of self. Whether it's the thumping bass of a motivational anthem or the stirring lyrics of a power ballad, the right song has the ability to make us feel more confident, energised, and ready to take on the world.

But how exactly does music influence our confidence levels? Let’s unpack into the psychological and physiological effects that make music such a powerful tool for boosting self-assurance.

The Psychological Effects of Music on Confidence

Music has a unique ability to connect with our emotions, often bypassing our conscious thoughts and triggering an immediate response. Several scientific studies have shown that listening to music can have a direct impact on our mood, motivation, and even self-perception. When we hear a song with uplifting lyrics or an energising beat, it can shift our mindset from doubt or anxiety to one of confidence and joy.

Research has consistently shown that music lights up nearly all areas of the human brain - activating emotional responses in us. A study published in Social Psychology and Personalist Science in 2014 found that listening to "power songs" and songs with strong bass could significantly increase feelings of empowerment and participants' sense of power. Researchers have also found that participants who listened to high-power music felt more in control and more likely to take assertive actions compared to those who listened to less energising music.

Music also taps into the brain's reward system, releasing dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and motivation. This release of dopamine creates a positive feedback loop, making us feel good and more motivated, which naturally boosts confidence.

The Physiological Effects: How Music Impacts the Body

When we listen to music, it doesn't just influence our minds - it influences our bodies, too. Up-tempo, rhythmic music has been shown to increase heart rate and blood flow, mimicking the physical sensations associated with excitement and energy. This heightened physiological state can make us feel more alert, powerful, and ready for action. A fast tempo or a strong, steady beat can prepare the body for movement, which is why certain types of music are so effective before workouts or high-pressure situations like public speaking.

A 2024 study in the International Journal of Arts Recreation and Sports confirmed that personalised music selections supported coordination and cognitive engagement, which contributed to improved performance and enjoyment of sports. Music that encourages movement, such as high-energy songs with strong beats, activates the motor regions of the brain, which helps increase overall body coordination and focus.

Musical Elements That Enhance Confidence

Certain musical elements, including tempo, rhythm, melody, and lyrics, play a crucial role in how music affects our mood and confidence.

Here's how these elements contribute to building self-assurance:

  • Tempo: Faster tempos, typically above 120 beats per minute (BPM), are linked to increased levels of excitement and energy. Songs with higher tempos help energise listeners, making them feel more active and empowered. These types of songs are perfect for pre-workout sessions or when gearing up for a challenging task.
  • Rhythm: A strong, driving rhythm (such as the beat in Eye of the Tiger) can create a sense of movement and progression. Rhythms that are steady and repetitive can also increase focus, helping listeners feel more in control and decisive.
  • Melody: Uplifting or soaring melodies, especially those in a major key, have been shown to improve mood. Melodies that rise in pitch often evoke feelings of hope, optimism, and confidence.
  • Lyrics: Empowering lyrics that emphasise themes of resilience, strength, and self-belief can directly influence how we perceive ourselves. Songs like Fighter by Christina Aguilera or Roar by Katy Perry deliver messages that align with self-confidence, reminding listeners of their own inner strength. The psychological impact of affirming lyrics can be profound, as they reinforce positive self-talk and belief in one’s abilities.

Music to Boost Confidence in Different Situations

Different types of music can be tailored to specific situations where confidence is needed. Here's how various styles and tempos can serve as a confidence booster, depending on the context:

  • Pre-workout: Fast-paced, high-energy songs with strong beats and motivating lyrics are perfect for working out. Songs like Stronger by Kanye West or Till I Collapse by Eminem help push through physical barriers and increase performance by getting the body and mind into a state of heightened alertness.
  • Before a presentation or important meeting: When preparing for a high-pressure situation, songs with steady rhythms and empowering lyrics can help increase focus and lower anxiety. Tracks like Unstoppable by Sia or Lose Yourself by Eminem create a mental space of determination and readiness.
  • To overcome setbacks: When recovering from a setback or rejection, songs that emphasise resilience and strength, such as Survivor by Destiny’s Child or I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor, can help listeners shift their mindset from defeat to determination.
  • Everyday confidence boost: For those moments when you need a quick pick-me-up, cheerful, feel-good songs with upbeat tempos and uplifting melodies, such as Happy by Pharrell Williams or Good as Hell by Lizzo, can brighten your mood and elevate your self-esteem.

Music’s ability to boost confidence lies in its power to shape our emotional and physiological states. Whether through energising rhythms, uplifting melodies, or empowering lyrics, the right song can shift our mindset, increase motivation, and prepare us to take on any challenge with self-assurance. So next time you're feeling uncertain or need an extra push, turn up the volume and let the music do its magic.

How to Be More Confident: Empowering Advice from a Confidence Coach

We collaborated with Sarah Tombs, Global Calm & Confidence Coach & Workplace Well-being Consultant who said: ‘’Confidence isn’t about being bold or brash—it’s about feeling truly at ease in our own skin. At its core, confidence is a sense of trust in who we are. Yet, for many women, confidence feels elusive. This struggle often stems from societal pressures or internalised myths telling us we’re ‘not enough’ in some way.

One of the biggest myths around confidence is that it’s innate—that people either have it or they don’t. This can be disheartening, making us think it’s outside of our control. Yet, the reality is, confidence is entirely learnable. It is empowering to know that we can all intentionally build confidence by nurturing our relationship with ourselves, building self-awareness, taking empowering actions, setting achievable goals, celebrating small wins, and surrounding ourselves with people online and in real life - who lift us up.

Music, too, is a powerful ally for building confidence. The right tempo or lyric can immediately lift our spirits, grounding us in the present, connecting us with our inner strength and empowering us to face challenges with unshakable energy and boost our self-belief.’’

Actionable Tips for Boosting Self-confidence

Top 10 tips for cultivating more inner confidence and self-esteem, that you can try today:

  1. Reframe Self-Talk: When negative thoughts arise, challenge them by asking, "What’s the evidence?" Replace harsh self-criticism with encouraging, affirming statements. Think about how you would talk to someone you loved and do that with yourself!
  2. Use Confidence Anchors: Confidence anchors are small objects or gestures that remind you of positive past experiences. For example, keep a small token or a ring and touch it to evoke those strong memories of a time when you felt most confident, bringing them forward when you find yourself needing a boost.
  3. Visualise Success: Practice visualisation, using mental preparation to picture yourself handling a scenario with confidence. Focus on your movements, speech, and how you feel in this mental rehearsal to strengthen your self-assurance.
  4. Grounding Exercises: Calmness is essential for confidence. Use techniques like slow deep breathing or sensory grounding (focusing on what you see, hear, and feel) to stay in the present moment.
  5. Create Your Confidence Soundtrack: Curate a playlist with empowering music that uplifts you. Play it before big events, challenging situations or in the morning getting ready for the day. Elevate your mood, connect to your strength and boost empowering energy.
  6. Practice Self-Curiosity: Notice moments or situations when you feel confident and when you don’t. Identify areas for growth and work on them with compassion, letting go of any judgement. Remember confidence is something you can build.
  7. Reflect on Strengths: Take time to write down your strengths and acknowledge your achievements. Recognising small wins reinforces self-worth and will empower your future growth. Let go of the idea that this is ‘big-headed,’ it’s essential for confidence.
  8. Let Go of Perfectionism: Accept that perfection doesn’t exist; it’s a myth that can trip us all up! Instead, focus on making progress, learning from experiences, growing gradually, and moving forward on your empowerment journey.
  9. Surround Yourself with Positivity: Choose friends, social media content, and influences that feel supportive and nourishing. Engage with environments that lift you up and with those who want to see you shine.
  10. Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same understanding that you would naturally offer to your friend; this strengthens your resiliency and boosts inner empowerment.

Methodology

Using Spotify's API, we analysed over 8,000 songs from confidence-themed playlists to create decade-specific collections of empowering music for women. Each track was evaluated using a custom 'Confidence Score' that measures energy, positivity (valence), and danceability, with additional weight given to songs in major keys. We filtered out explicit content, less popular tracks, and instrumental pieces to ensure a curated selection of accessible, lyric-driven music. Data was collected and analysed in September 2024 using Spotify's platform and analysis tools, resulting in an uplifting playlist series that spans from the 1970s to present day.
